Course Duration

The OAL Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management (QN: 610/4127/0) comprises 52 credits with a total qualification time of 510 hours, including 229 guided learning hours, and all 8 units are mandatory, with learners required to complete all units.

Assessment Method

1. Theory Assessment

This qualification is internally assessed and marked by the centre and externally quality assured by OAL using the following assessment methods:

  • Portfolio of evidence

The portfolio of evidence may consist of various types of assessment evidence including work-based projects, observation of learner performance, question and answer, written records, assignments, projects etc. The portfolio is internally set and marked and externally quality assured by OAL. A portfolio mapping document is available for approved centres to download from the OAL portal.

Learners are required to achieve all learning outcomes and assessment criteria within the units of assessment and all assessment criteria must be assessed and achieved by learners.

Knowledge outcomes must be assessed using methods that meet the needs of learners, this may include responses to oral or written questioning or the use of assignments or tests.

All assessments are subject to internal quality assurance within approved centres providing this qualification. External quality assurance of assessment within approved centres is provided by OAL.

Qualification Purpose

The OAL Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management provides occupational health and safety understanding, knowledge and skills, at strategic level for professional occupational health and safety individuals already managing or wishing to progress to manage occupational health and safety for their organisation.

As this programme is accredited by IOSH, eligible enrolled students can access IOSH Student Membership for the duration of their studies and/ on successful completion, they will meet the academic requirements for certified membership.

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is designed for learners who are working or plan to work in the occupational health and safety sector at a senior level, members of the senior management team or reporting directly to them, managing occupational health and safety policy, procedure, practice and compliance for their organisation.

Entry requirements:

Learners must have a minimum of the following:

  • OAL Level 3 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent
  • Relevant work experience in the sector at the appropriate level
  • It is recommended that learners are IOSH members (all grades qualify)

Centres must also ensure that learners have the potential and opportunity to achieve the qualification successfully, this includes English language requirements.

For learners whose English is not their primary language it is recommended that they should have a minimum of English language B2 in the Common European Framework (CEFR) or equivalent.

It is the centres responsibility to ensure and record this to ensure that learners have a suitable level of English to meet the requirements of this qualification.

This qualification is not approved for use by learners under the age of 19 years and OAL cannot accept any registrations for learners below this age group.
